► FEBRUARY
13, 2007 :: MIRAMICHI POLICE FORCE Miramichi Police Force advises public regarding fraudulent activity; use good judgment when answering
automated telephone solicitations
Over the past few days, citizens
of the city of Miramichi have been receiving phone calls from telemarketing groups that are believed to
be fraudulent. The typical pattern for the scam is that a resident receives a call from an automated prompter stating that
a prize has been won. The message continues by asking the victim to push ‘9’ or another number, eventually leading
to the victim being asked to provide a credit card number.
Another scam circulating is where
the caller states they are calling on behalf of Mastercard Corporation. The caller then recites an incomplete credit card
number and asks that the victim reveal the last 4 digits of their Mastercard number, or in some circumstances, the 3-digit
Credit Card Validation Code on the back of their Mastercard. Miramichi Polce Force has contacted Mastercard Corporation who
has stated there is no such campaign being conducted by the company. In fact, Mastercard will never call their customers
asking for information such as card or account numbers, as they already have them.
Miramichi Force advises the public
to use good judgement and commonsense when answering automated telephone solicitations. Do not submit to
any solicitation over the phone where you have to provide confidential information. You can become a victim of fraud or identity
theft.
To educate
yourself, or to report receiving such a call, please contact our partner, “PhoneBusters”
