9, 2009 :: RCMP and NEW BRUNSWICK OFF-ROAD VEHICLE ENFORCEMENT UNIT Vandals targeting Sentier NB Trail - $8,000 in damages
In recent weeks, New Brunswick Trails Council (NBTCI) has noted an increasing amount of damage to the Sentier New Brunswick Trails (SNBT), particularly on the Miramichi line.
Directors are dismayed that an apparent campaign of deliberate vandalism is targeting the SNBT system throughout much of rural
New Brunswick.
In the past few days, 10 gates were cut off and 32
signs were stolen, including several stop signs that create an immediate safety hazard for trails users. The value of the
damages to the Miramichi line alone is more than $8,000.
In many
rural areas throughout the province, the ongoing vandalism on trails is generating increasing expenses for NBTCI.
“Our volunteer board of directors work hard to provide a safe and enjoyable trail
system for New Brunswick residents and visitors. It is frustrating when we see hard-earned fundraising and taxpayer dollars
thrown away because of the action of thoughtless and inconsiderate vandals,” stated Brian Clark, NBTCI president.
The RCMP and New Brunswick Off Road Vehicle Enforcement unit have been
notified of all of the damages and NBTCI encourages anyone to report any vandalism done on the Sentier NB Trail. If anyone
has any information about this vandalism, or if they see anyone who is acting suspiciously, they are asked to contact local
police, or remain anonymous and become eligible for a cash award by contacting Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

5, 2009 :: MIRAMICHI POLICE FORCE Police and NB Power investigate theft of copper wire at Jackson St. substation
Miramichi Police Force is investigating
a report of theft from NB Power on May 5, 2009 at 10:45 a.m. Unknown culprits entered the NB Power Transformer site on
Jackson Street (near Douglasfield) and removed a quantity of copper wiring, which had been connected to power poles as ground
wires. The Miramichi Police Force, N.B. Crime Stoppers, and NB Power are concerned about this theft as these ground wires
not only endanger the person(s) responsible, but also to NB Power employees and the general public.
Interruptions due to copper theft can also lead to loss of electricity to essential services such
as hospitals and 911 services. An example occurred in New Brunswick when criminals stole copper from a substation in Stanley,
New Brunswick, which resulted in a loss of electricity that not only affected homes and businesses, but also resulted in 911
services being lost for several hours. It is for all of these reasons that NB Power will enhance its relationship with Crime
Stoppers, and will add up to an additional $5,000 in award money for tips leading to arrests made in copper thefts from NB
Power property and/or facilities.
“Copper theft is extremely
dangerous and compromises the safety of our employees, first responders and the public," said Duff Boyd, Director of
Health, Safety and Security for NB Power. “Tampering with equipment in our substations can lead to deadly consequences
for the criminal, but also for anyone coming in close proximity to the facility, which could include an employee entering
the substation to conduct maintenance or a child who may be playing in the area.”
If anyone has any information
about this theft, or if they see anyone who is acting suspiciously, they are asked to contact Miramichi Police at (506) 623-2124,

► FEBRUARY
13, 2007 :: MIRAMICHI POLICE FORCE Miramichi Police Force advises public regarding fraudulent activity; use good judgment when answering
automated telephone solicitations
Over the past few days, citizens
of the city of Miramichi have been receiving phone calls from telemarketing groups that are believed to
be fraudulent. The typical pattern for the scam is that a resident receives a call from an automated prompter stating that
a prize has been won. The message continues by asking the victim to push ‘9’ or another number, eventually leading
to the victim being asked to provide a credit card number.
Another scam circulating is where
the caller states they are calling on behalf of Mastercard Corporation. The caller then recites an incomplete credit card
number and asks that the victim reveal the last 4 digits of their Mastercard number, or in some circumstances, the 3-digit
Credit Card Validation Code on the back of their Mastercard. Miramichi Polce Force has contacted Mastercard Corporation who
has stated there is no such campaign being conducted by the company. In fact, Mastercard will never call their customers
asking for information such as card or account numbers, as they already have them.
Miramichi Force advises the public
to use good judgement and commonsense when answering automated telephone solicitations. Do not submit to
any solicitation over the phone where you have to provide confidential information. You can become a victim of fraud or identity
theft.
To educate
yourself, or to report receiving such a call, please contact our partner, “PhoneBusters”
