The people who answer the Crime Stoppers lines are trained to
get as much information as possible. During the course of debriefing tipsters, they get a good feel of what type of person
they talking to.
Our Crime Stoppers Coordinators will tell you that:
25% are criminals calling about other criminals.
Whomever coined the phrase "honor among thieves" would regret reading this.
40% are what our coordinators call the "hang
around's". They are not brave or stupid enough to commit the crime but are trusted by those who do the crime.
The remaining 35% are good citizens, for one reason
or another, they just want to do their civic duty and remain anonymous.
Less that 30% of the callers to Crime Stoppers want
the cash award
By
calling N.B. Crime Stoppers (1-800-222-8477), you can pass-on information about crime, anonymously. Crime Stoppers
callers know what’s going on but can’t, or won’t, walk into a police station. You may know the person
involved, have overheard something you shouldn’t, seen something and don’t know what to do. Whatever the
case may be, you know something about a crime or a criminal, so tell us what you know, not who you are.
Crime Stoppers' key function is to ensure your information about crime reaches the police or other relevant
authority. You won’t be asked your name, nor to make a formal statement or to give evidence in court. But
perhaps most importantly, because you’ve given information anonymously, you need not fear reprisals.
Even in this communications age, picking up the phone is the easiest and best way to pass on
your information to Crime Stoppers. We will never attempt to trace or record your call – not even for quality control
or monitoring purposes. We do not use "call display" phones.
Remember if the anonymity of one of our callers was made known, it would destroy Crime Stoppers
as no one would feel they could trust us. This is why it is so important to us that we can guarantee your anonymity.
The most valuable information comes from a phone call. Our experienced call operators make sure we have all the correct information, no opportunity for
confusion over a name or address. Your information can therefore be used to best effect in solving crimes.
REMEMBER: Crime
Stoppers is not an emergency service, and if you see a crime taking place, you should dial 9-1-1
(in Miramichi) to report it immediately.
